wont run with choke open only runs slow when I manually push rod

Answer
It sounds like there was old fuel left in the carb and it has varnished the main nozzle restricting the fuel flow.  When you close the choke you are compensating for it not getting fuel.

you can clean the carb or replace it.  It is often better to replace then try to repair since if the repair doesnt solve the problem you need to replace it anyway!

PS   To prevent this from happening in the future, always run the carb dry of fuel before storing your generator.
