Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda Lawn mower, Honda starter

Question
when i pull start the string, the string didn't go back in the mower so it got
stuck. how can i fix it to work?

Answer
You may need to take the starter apart to find the problem.  You can try tapping on the top of the starter with a rubber mallet and seeing if it will retract.  Sometimes rust and dirt jam them up.

You also could have a broken recoil spring.  By removing the starter from the engine you'll see how the reel, (the pulley the rope winds on) and spring is held on.  The spring itself is probably between the reel and housing.  When removing the reel, be careful because the spring is in a coil and can come out.  Wearing safety glasses is a good idea.

If the spring is broken, then you have a choice.  Either replace the spring or the entire starter.  In the shop we usually recommend replacing the starter if it's got a lot of use on it.

If you need part numbers or further details, get me the model and serial number off the engine and I'll try to help further.  Thanks, PK.
