Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Honda Engine, needle nose pliers, honda gx120

Question
I have a honda GX120 that runs fine at half choke but if i turn choke off motor dies

Answer
The engine is simply not getting enough fuel.  When you put it to half choke you are compensating for the lack of fuel.

To rectify this problem, you need to clean the carb.

Step 1:   Remove the carb from the engine

Step 2:   Hold the carb upside down and remove the float bowl by unscrewing the nut at the bottom of the carb.

Step 3:  Remove the float hinge pin, you may need the assistance of a needle nose pliers to do this.

Step 4:  Remove the float and needle. Check the needle for obvious signs of wear.  If worn REPLACE needle.

Step 5:  In the Center of the carb is a main jet.  Remove this main jet and clean with spray carb cleaner.  Use a soft tag wire to probe the opening to be sure it is not obstructed.

Step 6:  Remove the main nozzle assembly from the carb and clean it with commercial carb cleaner and probe all the openings with soft tag wire to ensure they are clean and fuel is able to flow through them.

Step 7: The nut that you removed from the bottom of the carb has holes in it and must be cleaned and unobstructed as well.  Spray carb cleaner through it and once again probe it with soft tag wire to be sure it is open.

SOFT TAG wire is wire small enough to fit through the small holes.  I generally use a bread twist tie that i have stripped the paper off off.  Make sense..

Step 8:  Replace any necessary gaskets and reassemble the carb.  Reinstall onto the engine and your problem should be solved.

If you dont feel comfortable doing this type of repair you can most likely by a new carb for around $60.00 USD or less.  A servicing dealer can also help you with this repair.
