Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Kohler trouble, gasket maker, flathead screwdriver

Question
QUESTION: Hi I have Kohler 12.5 h.p. engine mod# cv12.5 spec 1237 on a lawn tractor. The problem I'm having is getting the sump off ? it has a oil pump in it with metal lines going from oil filter to sump and 12 bolts. I have taking the 12 bolts out and the pump cover and gears out oil pump still in also i have tap and tap and still won't break loose. it has a perminent rubber seal not a paper one. Any suggestions would help a lot! Thanks so much for your time .

ANSWER: Hello Allen:

>>Are you Sure the Seal is Rubber and Not Permatex Form-a-Gasket?
>>Usually the Sump is Either a Paper Gasket or Permatex Ultra Grey High Torque. This is a High Temperature Form-a-Gasket Maker/Sealer.
>>Sometimes you have to Use a Flat Screw Driver or Thin Flat Chisel and Wedge it Between the Sump and the Block. Make Sure ALL the Bolts are Out of the Sump before Doing this.
>>You can View a Breakdown of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.kohlerplus.com/login.asp and Select Enter as Guest. Now Select the Thumbnail of the Engine Catalog you Wish to View.
>>Please, Do Not Hesitate, If you Hit a Snag, if I Missed Something or this Does Not Correct the Problem, I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

QUESTION: Thanks John for your answer! Your right it is permatex.I've tried to use a flathead screwdriver but it's so tight I can't quiet get it in their to wedge it apart and I surely don't want to break anything cause they no longer have this sump. Any other suggestions on how to get the screwdriver in? once again thanks so much for your time and MAY GOD BLESS YOU THIS DAY! Alan

Answer
Hello Again Allen:

>>Are you Sure the Model is a 12.5-1237 and Not a 12.5S-1937?
>>I cannot Locate a Spec #1327.
>>Not Being Able to Locate the Proper Manual I Assumed (which I should Know Better than to Do) you had the12.5 Kohler with the 12 Bolt Pan. There are 14 Bolts in the Oil Pan/Sump. The 2 Bolts you have Missed are Not in the Outer Section of the Oil Pan/Sump, but are Located Towards the Inside Section of the Oil Pan/Sump.
>>USe the Following Site Addy to Locate these Screws.
>>You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM (Kohler) and Enter the Model and Spec Numbers (12.5S-1937). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View.
