Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 18.5 HP OHV Intek Plus engine, briggs and stratton, valve adjustment

Question
I have owned a Sears 42" mower with this engine for just over three years.  I have taken it to a local shop on two occasions due to poor starting.  They explained that this engine regularly requires valve adjustment.  The engine runs well, but is difficult to start.  Evidently the valves don't open soon enough to release compression, and the engine won't turn over.  After a few tries, it will eventually start and run fine.

If possible, I would like to do the valve adjustment myself.  Is this a reasonable goal for an experienced amateur?  If so, what printed resources are available?

Answer
Briggs and Stratton sells good manuals for repairing their products.  Chilton and Haynes also sell quality products.   If you live near a large city with a good library they often have these repair manuals you can check out.

Adjusting the valves will be a real challenge at first, just like any new task, but with the proper repair manual, tools and internet resources you should have no problem performing this service yourself.

Let me know if this helps.
