Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Replacing the auger on a Craftsman Snow Thrower, craftsman snow thrower, gear case

Question
QUESTION: Mr Bridgers- I own a 7.5 HP Craftsman Snow Thrower (model# 536.881750) and need to replace the LH Auger. I ordered the part and now that I look closer it is clearly not as easy as removing the 3 side bolts to slide the new auger in place. I was hoping that this would be a fairly standard repair (even for a novice like myself) and it could be that I am missing something obvious. Without removing the side of the housing, which is welded into place, it doesn't appear that there is enough clearance unless the impeller and gear case are moved/removed.  I would greatly appreciate your guidance and expertise.

QUESTION: Thanks for the quick response John.  I have reviewed the diagrams but I do have some more specific questions.  Unfortunately after removing the 3 bolts in the flange bearing, it doesn't appear that there is enough clearance to slide the old auger off the shaft without: a) removing the side housig which is welded together (even though the diagram makes it look as if the side housing is held on by screws and can be easily removed) or b)somehow pulling the gear case and impeller forward until it is clear of the housing and the augers can then be slid outward off the shaft.  Since I do not have the welder or experience welding I would rather not take the housing apart.  Messing with the gear case also makes me quite nervous. I assume that somewhere the shaft that comes through the impeller and into the gear case must be held in place by a bolt or some other means. Is it possible that there is a bolt holding the shaft in place, that once removed, would allow me to slide the shaft and gear case forward far enough to then have clearance needed to replace the auger?  I am afraid that anything more complex than that is out of my league and I will need to take it in for repair.  Again, I appreciate any your assistance.

Answer
Hello Again Doug:

One Side is Supposed to be Welded and the Other is Supposed to be Bolted. You have to Remove the Bolted Side First to Disassemble the Auger Assembly. According to the Breakdown the LH Side is Welded and the RH is the Bolted Side. I have a Sears Unit Due to be in the Shop on Friday of this Week and if this is Not the Case I will Follow Up to you. If I have Not Gotten Back to you by Saturday (11/8/08), then Please Contact me and Remind me of this Conversation. Thanks.
