Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 12hp kohler engine exchange, crankshaft diameter, kohler engine

Hi, i have a cub cadet 1282 with a kohler 12hp k301 engine. I would like to know if I could replace the 12hp with a larger size engine and if there would be alot of modifications to do it. I need to run a larger mower deck and the 12hp just doesnt seem to have the power to do it good enough. Runs the 38" deck great. I would like to go up to a 16hp if it can be done quite simply, just change them out.

Yes you can.  The most important things will be crankshaft diameter and length.  Next will be the electrical system you should be able to buy a larger engine with the same system on this is very important so it operates properly when plugged into your wire harness.  I believe Koehler has engine interchangeability list that will help you.  Check with the Koehler dealer.
