Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere LT155/Kohler CV15S spec 41594 ser 3008903833, john deere lt155, ac volts

Question
Engine died while mowing.  Battery is only 2 mos. old.  When trying to restart, could barely hear starter motor turning, not enough force to turn engine over.  I hooked up a charger which indicated 50-75% charge.  I let it recharge over night.  the next day mower started up and I was able to finish mowing.  When I finished I re-connected the charger which again showed about 50-75% charge. It seems like a charging system problem.  What would you suggest?  What are the components of the charging system?  Thank you.

Answer
Hello Gary:

From your Description and After Viewing the Breakdown of the Mowers Engine it Sounds like the Stator/Charging Coil or the Voltage Regulator (if the Stator is 15amp) is Bad. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine and Mower at this Site Addy, http://jdpc.deere.com/jdpc/servlet/com.deere.u90490.partscatalog.view.servlets.H... and Enter the Model Numbers and Click Find. Then Select your Model from the Search Results Area. Then Select the Sectional File. Then Select the Section of the Mower you Wish to View Online. Select the Electrical File. Then Select the Flywheel, Ign Coil and Stator Sub File. For Testing the Electrical (Charging) System on Mowers you can Use this Site Addy; http://faqs.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/faqs.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3438&p... and Use the Link for AC Volts/DC Amps Meter Setting Chart. This is for Briggs Engines, but Works Well for Kohler, Tecumseh, JD and Other Engine OEMs. NEVER Jump a Mower from a Vehicle Battery while the Vehicle is Running. When the Mower Starts, the Stator or Voltage Regulator is Damaged and you will have Charging Problems. The Vehicles Charging System is Larger (usually No Lower than 68amps or higher) than the Mowers Charging System (usually no Higher than 18amps) and this Difference in Voltage Amperage Causes the Damage to the Mowers Charging System. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
