Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs and Stratton, briggs and stratton, 9 volt

Question
I have a Troy Built riding mower with a B&S 17.5 HP engine model 31c707 - I am getting gas in the oil - the carberator has small piece on the float bowl with a wire going to it.  I think it may be an electronic float of some sort.  Do you know how to check this piece or any other solutions that may help.

Answer
Sorry it took so long to respond, I’m in the process of moving and just got internet.

Do you have the engine type number?  The part on the bottom of the carb with the wire is the anti-backfire solenoid.  This is not causing you problem but to check it you can use a 9 volt battery.  Dis-connect the wire then connect the positive side of the 9 volt to the pin the wire was connected and then ground the negative side of the 9 volt to a metal engine part; the solenoid should click.

You problem is a leaky inlet needle and/or seat.  To fully solve your problem you need to replace the parts.  Of course you will have to remove, dis-assamble the carb to replace the parts.  I would also clean the fuel tank and carb with compressed air to ensure there is no debri that will cause the inlet needle to leak.

Let me know if this helps.
