Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): flywheel and crankshaft but no piston??, appropriate boxes, truck battery

Question
I have recently obtained a 15hp Craftsman Riding Lawn Tractor (42") (model: 917257570).  When I turn the key - nothing happens, but I think the battery is dead.  I'll get to that later.

The issue I am having, though, is that the starter (when jumped with my truck battery) will jump, and turn the flywheel.  But I don't believe the piston is moving.

So - in short, I can get the starter to turn the flywheel, and the flywheel is turning the crankshaft (because the pulleys underneath the tractor are turning), but after removing the sparkplug, I don't see the piston moving at all, and I don't feel any compression (when the plug is in).

Can someone explain this to me?

Answer
Hello Johnathan:

From your Description it Sounds like the Connecting Rod has Broken. The Only Way a Crankshaft wiil Turn and the Piston Not Move is when the Connecting Rod has Broken. The Connecting Rod Attaches the Piston to the Crankshaft. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of the Engine at this Site Addy; http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/manual_and_more/doclist.aspx?categ... and Enter the Model Numbers (28N707) and Type Numbers (0121) in the Appropriate Boxes and Click GO. Then Select Download PDF. According to the Sears Breakdown, the Model Numbers I Gave you are for the Engine on this Model Mower. To make Sure these are Correct; the Engine Model Numbers are Usually Located Across from the Spark Plug on the Blower Housing (metal engine cover). If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
