Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): 8HP Briggs Converted with Magnatron Problems?, internal combustion, lawn chief

Question
Hello.  Hopefully you can help me.  I've got an ancient Lawn Chief riding
mower handed down to me from my Grandfather.  Anyway, it has an 8HP
Briggs.  Every season, I need to pull the flywheel and clean the points.  This
year I decided to convert it over to solid state using a Magnatron kit
#394970.  Well, I've now got a powerful spark.  However, when I try and
crank it, it seems as if it's firing at the wrong time or something.  I am
getting constant flames out the carburator (actually a small fire at one point)
and no internal combustion fire whatsoever.  Something just isn't right.  I
know I have this thing installed correctly.  Is there any way they sold me the
incorrect module kit?  The rear of the Briggs has a model # 190707, Type
#5655  01, and Code # 81120312 if that helps at all.

Thanks so much in advance.  I just really need to get this thing running ASAP.

Answer
Hello Robert:

Is the Flywheel Key Damaged? I will Check on the Magnetron Ign Unit Part Numbers in the AM and Follow Up to you Later in the Day on 04/16/08. Other than the Flywheel Key being Damaged, the Wrong Magnetron Kit or a Burnt Valve, there is Nothing Else that would Cause the Problem you are having. Thanks.

Hello Again Robert:

Is the Magnetron Set at .020in from the Flywheel? I Just Located a Picture of the Magnetron Kit you were Asking About. Place the Magnetron on the Opposite Side (Pickup Leg) of the Coil. If Clipped to the Coil on the Wrong Side you will have the Problem you Described. When Clipped on the Wrong Side it Causes the Coil to Fire the Plug too Early and the Engine will Backfire through the Intake and Carburetor. I Did Contact Briggs About the Proper Magnetron Kit for this Engine and you have the Correct Kit. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
