Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): B&S 6.5 Quantum dies after a few minutes, high grass, spec numbers

Question
Hi John,
I have a 2 year old Snapper with the 6.5 HP B&S quantum engine. This year when I first started using it, I was able to cut my front yard but after a few passes at the back yard the engine dies (like I was going through very high grass, but I was not). It would not restart immediately but would after a few minutes. I stopped it and checked the oil and it was low so I added appropriately.  I restarted it and it again cut off after a few minutes. So the next morning I took gas tank off and cleaned the line and filter hoping that it was just clogged somewhere. It started up fine as usual but after 3 passes in the yard it died again. I haven't worked much on small engines but I fear I may have burnt valves, cylinder, etc. or done some damage since the oil was low at one point. Any ideas would be very much appreciated.  Happened to run across this site and you seem like the expert to ask.  Thank you, Dan

Answer
Hello Dan:

The Next Time it Quits, Check the Spark Plug for Fire. If No Fire, then Remove the Shut Off Wire from the Ign Coil (Under the Blower Housing). Check for Fire, If No Fire, then the Coil/Magneto/Ignition Module is Bad. If there is Fire, then Reconnect the Shut Off Wire to the Coil and Check the Gas Tank Cap and Ensure the Cap is Venting Properly. Send me the Model and Type or Spec Numbers Off the Engine, Please. With these I can Locate the Proper Manual and Better Assist you. The Model Numbers May be Stamped Into the Blower Housing (metal engine cover) Above the Spark Plug. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
