Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): sears riding mower, model numbers, pulley

Question
My sears riding mower is 3 years old. I have put 2 new belts on it and when I engage the idling pulley to mow, nothing happens. If I hold my hand on the seat to keep it running and stick a piece of wood and push the pulley back it will engage but will only run about 3/4 strength. I bought a new cable but cannot imagine that it could be it but maybe it is. It is a LT2000 18.5  Thanks
