Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere L118 B&S 22hp V-twin Stops Running, john deere l118, engine vibration

Question
My mower is 2 1/2 years old and did have a valve replaced a year ago. Just some background history..

My problem is kinda weird. When I was doing my fall clean up last year, my mower would just stop running. As if I was out of gas (same sound) but I wasnt. I disconnected the fuel line and looked to see if anything was clogged in the filter then hooked it back up. It started and ran for a few minutes then stopped again. I changed the filter and it ran again and stopped. I started to realize that when I broke the siphon and reattached the line, it would work gain for a while. Do you think it could be the fuel pump? I seen your post on changing the clamp. You mention the vacume line, is this the fuel line? I will have to go to the shed later and look at it again. I plan on doing that today. Any other suggestions would be great. Should I try changing the fuel pump next?

Also, my mower is almost impossible to start when its real cold. I dont know if the problems are connected? If not, do you have any suggestions. I wanted to pick up a snow blade if I see one cheap but it would be no good if I cant get the mower started.

Thanks in advance...

Mike

Answer
Hello Mike:

This can be Caused by Several Things. The Next Time it Quits, Check the Spark Plug for Fire Right then. If No Fire, then the Coil/Magneto/Ignition Module is Bad. If there is Fire, then Check the Gas Tank Cap and Ensure the Cap is Venting Properly. The Fuel Pump has a Vacuum Line from the Engine. Change the Clamps to the Screw Type Clamps. When the Spring Type Clamps Get Old they Tend to Weaken and Allow the Vacuum to be Lost Due to Engine Vibration. If the Ign Module is Heating Up and Breaking Down, it will Lose Spark to the Plug and Quit Running. If the Stator/Alternator/Voltage Regulator is Bad and the DC Voltage is Not Correct, then the Carburetor Solenoid will Shut Off the Gas Flow to the Carburetor Jet and the Engine will Quit. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Thanks.

Good Luck
