Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs 190432, air mixture, gas tank

Question
I have this engine Briggs Mod 190432 8hp type 3035-01 on a 4kW generator.  Engine fires good and runs well for about 10 or 15 minutes at a time and cuts off.  Exhaust feels normal as I don't think it's overheating.  I am going to exchange the air filter and fuel filter.  This generator was given to me and had been sitting for a couple of yrs.  I was going to have carb cleaned,  but it runs so good when it runs I hate to unless it's the only way.  Thanks in advance.

Can you tell me the factory setting or whatever for the mixture screw on the carb?  Is it a half turn out from all the way in  or ????

Answer
Hello Luis:

From your Description either the Gas Cap is Not Venting the Tank and a Vaccum is Building in the Tank and Stopping the Gas Flow to the Carburetor or the Magnetron Coil is Breaking Down and Going Bad. To Set the Air Mixture Screw/Screws:  ****Turn the Idle Air and ****Main Air Mixture Screws In Until SNUG **Do Not Jam** Then Reverse Both Screws 1 1/2 Turns. Holding the Throttle Full Open, Start the Engine. Turn the Main Air Mixture Screw Clockwise Until Proper Revs are Obtained. Occasionally you May have to Turn this Counter Clockwise to Achieve the Proper Revs. Now Allow the Engine to Idle. Set the Engine Idle Screw (Not Idle Air) so the Engine will Stay Running if Required. Now Set the Idle Air Mixture Screw so there is No Hesitation when Throttling from Idle to Full Throttle. Reset the Engine Idle if Required.*** From the Diagram it Lookd like this Engine has the Magnetron Coil (Solid State Ign)and Not the Point Set Under the Flywheel. 1- Check the Gas Tank CAp and Ensire it is Venting the Tank. 2- Operate the Engine Until it Quits, then Immediately Remove the Spark Plug. Wrap a Wire Around the Threads and Attach the Other End of the Wire to the Engine Block Turn the Engine and See if the Plug Fires. If No, then Disconnect the Shut Off Wire  at the Control Bracket First, Check for Fire at the Plug. If Still No Fire at the Plug; Then Disconnect the Shut Off Wire at the Coil (usually requires removal of the blower housing) and Check for Fire at the Plug. If No Fire at the Plug , then the Coil/Ign Module is Bad. The Magnetron/Coil/Ign Module to Flywheel Gap is .020in. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model (5 or 6 Digits) and Type Numbers (first 4 digits Only). Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If you Hit a Snag or this Does Not Correct the Problem,  I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Hope this Helps. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Have a Happy Holiday Season and May the All Mighty Bless You and Yours. Be Safe and Happy. Thanks.

Good Luck
