Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Battery charge light sometimes stays on on a 318 JD, honda products, cable ends

Question
I just recently repowered my 318 JD with a B&S 18 hp Vanguard. Prior to the conversion I noted that my charge indicating light would come on then off then at times stay on. After installing the new engine I started it up and the light went off after about 5 sec and stayed off. Today I ran the tractor and the light came on and stayed on. It reacted the same as it did with the onan engine. Is there a separated regulator on the tractor other that what is mounted on the engine or do you think it could be wiring or perhaps the battery.  I plan to check the voltage output tomorrow but I would find it hard to believe that the new stator would be the issue.
Thanks In advance!

Answer
The only regulator is on the engine.  You may a poor/dirty ground as common on many Honda products.

First item I would check, as you mentioned, is the battery.  You should have it load tested at a local mower or auto shop.  I would also clean the battery terminals and cable ends with a wirebrush to ensure you have a clean connection.

Let me know what you find.
