Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs stumbling, twin cylinder engines, ohv engine

Question
Hey, I have a B&S generator that ran flawlessly until yesterday. I shut it down to change the oil, then when I refilled it and cranked it back up, it would not keep running at open choke. The choke has to be halfway; when it's set to "Run" it stumbles and tries to die, if its on "Choke" it does the exact same. I've torn down the carb and rebuilt it (soaked it overnight), oil level is fine, gas is fresh, I cleaned the tank (thoroughly), lines, and the plug is in good condition. Any ideas on what I could be looking at? Model 121012, Type 0114.

Answer
Hello Brad:

Is the Gas Free Flowing to the Carburetor Inlet Port? If Yes, then you will Most Likely have to Reclean the Carburetor Again. The Carburetor on this Engine is a Non-Adjustable Type and is the Hardest to Get Clean. Sometimes with this Type of Carburetor you have to Replace it Due to Grit Becoming Lodged in the Jet Area of the Carburetor and Carburetor Cleaner Does Not Work on Sand/Grit. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Type Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. If you Require a New Carburetor you can Purchase One from your Local Small Engine Service Center or Online from Outdoor Distributors ($42.42 plus shipping). This is an OHV Engine, so I have to Ask; Is the Engine Hard to Start? Does It Turn Over Smoothly and Start or Does it Turn and then Stop or Slow and Then Increase Turning Speed Before it Starts? If Yes to Either of the Above, then Reset the Valves. **I Do Not Use the Setting Called for by the OEMs. I have Found that the Following Works Best. Remove the Valve Cover (on the Dead Cylinder for Twin Cylinder Engines). Set the Cylinder you are Setting the Valves on to Top Dead Center (Both Rocker Arms will have Play in them when the Engine is at TDC) When Setting the Valve Clearance. Now Loosen the Valve Adjuster Locks and Set the Intake Valve Clearance to .004in -.006in and the Exhaust to .008in - .010in. I have had Better Performance Out of the Mowers and Less Burnt Valves Using these Settings.** Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
