Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs and Stratton Fuel Selonoid issue, briggs and stratton, starter fluid

Question
Hi John, I have a Murray 42 with a B/S I/C Quiet Industrial/Commercial 14.5hp motor, Model 287707-type 1272-E1.  After fixing other issues on this old boy it stopped while running after 10 minutes.  Seems like no gas.  I replaced fuel line and fuel filter and have gas to the cup/float area.  I know the engine runs b/c i have sprayed starter fluid into carb and it runs.  So I seem to have a problem with the Selonoid/float area.  Float seems to be ok Please help.

Answer
Hello Mort:

From your Description it Sounds like the Solenoid is Heating Up and Closing Off the Gas Flow to the Carburetor Jet. Remove the Carburetor Solenoid and Take it to the Hardware Store. Purchase a Bolt of the Same Diameter and Threads. It Needs to be 3/4" Long. Put this Bolt in Place of the Solenoid. If this Corrects the Engine Problem, then Replace the Solenoid. ***NOTE: THIS IS FOR CHECKING THE SOLENOID ONLY I NEVER SUGGEST YOU OPERATE THE ENGINE WITH THE SOLENOID OUT OF THE CARBURETOR EXCEPT FOR TESTING PURPOSES*** Sometimes the Plunger is Moving, Just Not Far Enough to Allow the Gas to Enter the Jets. You can View a Breakdown/IPL of this Engine at this Site Addy, http://www.smallenginepartswarehouse.com/parts.asp and Select the Shop Online Parts Look Up. Then Select the Model Tab. Then Select the OEM and Enter the Model and Type Numbers. Then Double Click on the Model in the Results Area. Now you can Select the Section of the Engine you Wish to View. Hope this Helps. I am Here if You Require More Assistance. Let me Know What Happens, Please. Thanks.

Good Luck
