Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Electric Start wont engage on snowthrower, craftsman snow thrower, thrust washer

Question
I have a 5 Hp Electric start Craftsman snow thrower model # 536.885214

The electric start is 115 volt and will spin but not engage the flywheel to start the engine.

When I removed the covers to observe the operation I see that the gear moves from the home position about 2 inches toward the flywheel gear. When I stop current it moves back to the home position. I can easily move it by hand the last two (2)inches where it engages the flywheel so I don't think that it is stuck.

Is there any adjustment that I don't see to get it to move the entire 4 inches or so and engage the flywheel or do I need to buy the entire electric starter?

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

As far as the adjustment usually there are shims that get placed on the starter bracket. When the thrust washer goes out see if the travel is all the way. Be very careful as sometimes you may get a finger struck between the engine and the thrust washer. If the travel is not all the way then the starter may need to be rebuilt. You can get one rebuilt or buy a new one.
