Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): John Deere STX 38 Garden Tractor, john deere stx 38, float bowl

Question
I was recently given a John Deere STX 38 Garden Tractor.  It has a Kohler CV12.5 Command Series engine.  The engine will crank but it doesn't seem to be getting gas to the carburetor.  I can spray gas or cleaner directly to the carb and it will fire but only for a second. The engine will not run.  The gas lines are all open to the carb but the filter bulb doesn't have much fuel in it.  I know there is a solenoid under the seat that prohibits the engine from running if not engaged.  Could that be the problem?  There also appears to be an electronic component under the carb.  Is there some form of electronic pump that may be failing?

Answer
Hi Jerry,

The switch under the seat usually controls spark, which you have.  The electric valve in the float bowl may be faulty or the fuel pump.  You can test these.  I suspect that the carb most likely has dirt, debris or gummed fuel inside.  You will need to remove the carb, disassemble it, clean all the small internal openings and blow it out with compressed air.   Probe each and every hole with a small wire.   Adding a carb rebuild kit wouldn't hurt either.

Let me know how you make out.
