Hey Eric. My problem is when you first crank the motor and engage the deck it starts to pop and back fire now i have drained the gas tank ,put fresh gas in it, replaced the spark plug, fuel filter, cleaned carb, it's an OHV17hp briggs
im thinking the valves might need adjusting .
what do you think about this .oh yeah after it runs for awhile it stops doing this and runs fine
Thank you ..JEFF

What is the engine model number?  Have you removed, dis-assembled and cleaned the carburetor with compressed air and carb cleaner?

Did you read the "Hard to start question"?  I'm not sure if that mower was a Murray but you might check the engin mounts and head bolts.

Let me know the engine model number and I'll look up the valve clearance.
Eric   Hey Eric . Here is model# 31c777, type# 0173e1 and code# 021226ze
and yes i did dis-assembled the carb cleaned it with cleaner and compressed air no changes. besides the valves, what do you think about the fuel cut off switch on the bottom of the carb bowl?  I have a nother Question for you can you give me the tourqe specs on a 3.5hp briggs rod caps? and the valve clearence on a honda GX120&GX160? Im working on some pumps for a guy and can't find no info on them. thank you ..Jeff

Answer
Normally the anti-backfire solenoid are fairly reliable; make sure the battery ground connection is clean as this affects the solenoid.  The valve clearance on the 17 hp is .004 of an inch.

Is the 3.5hp model number a 9xxxx?

I'll have to check on the Hondas.
Eric
