Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): brand replacement compatablility, shaft diameter, horsepower rating

Question
I have a Snapper rear rider SR1642 that I have seized.  The original engine is a Tecumseh 16hp and I was thinking of replacing with a Briggs.  Is there somewhere that lists engines with compatable mounting configurations?

Answer
Have you tried your loacal Briggs dealer?  They should be able to help you.  If they can't help you can always e-mail Briggs themselves.

Most engines of with the similar horsepower rating will bolt right on.  The main difference is the crankshaft output.  You can measure you old shaft diameter, lenght and keyway configuration and the Briggs dealer should have an engine sales manual to look up the correct engine.

Let me know what you find.
