Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawnmower blowing smoke and sputters, new spark, valve guides

Question
the engine was sputtering and not getting to full speed, someone suggested changing spark plug. the old one was dirty so put in a new one. did that and it still smoked and sputtered. took new spark plug out and it was wet with oil. what could be the problem? we dont have manual and markings are gone on mower so dont have model information to give u. thanks.

Answer
First you need to determine, for sure, if the plug is oil or fuel fouled (smell is indicator).  If it's oil, the oil level may be too high or there may be a problem with oil reaching the cylinder via bad rings or worn valve guides.  If it's fuel, there is a problem with the carb (dirty, blockage, etc.) that will need to be addressed.  Hope this helps.
