Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): tecumseh engine, bolt torque, point gap

Question
Developed no-spark condition on old Tecumseh 5hp Ariens tiller engine (eng mod # H50-65389K).  Replaced points, condenser, coil, plug. Fired off immediatly but engine only ran at rough idle...can not make it speed up...dies if throttle opened more.  Took carb off & cleaned it very good.  Reinstalled, results same...still rough idle, but immediate start. Carb adjustment dosen't change things. Engine speeds up & smooths out for few seconds sometimes.  I still suspect carb. PLease help. Thanks

Answer
Probably carb, but re-check the point gap.  I've had an older engine do the same thing, took me a long time to figure out the problem.  I set the points just a couple of thousandths closer and it ran great.

Also, check the intake gaskets, bolts and  head bolt torque.  Again, I had an old Tecumseh that ran bad...turned out to be three sllightly loose headbolts on the exhaust side; this problem appeared to be carburetor, which in a round about way was.  Again, this took me a very long time to find.

What did you set the points at?
