Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): lawn mower starter cord broke, recoil spring, starter cord

how do you fix to make it retract,pull to start but cord stays out,and does not rewind back in,any help would be great

The recoil spring is likely broken or partially broken.  I recommend for everyone that asks about recoils to take it into a good shop and have them repair it.  If you haven't repaired a recoil before you can damage the new spring and cost yourself even more money.  There is also a risk of injury because you are working with a spring that, when wound up, has a lot of energy to release.  Ask if you can watch the technician when the shop is repairing it to give you an idea if you want to attempt this repair should you need to in the future.  Hope this helps.
