Question -
The recoil rope on my 1996 XCR broke.
How do I repair this?  Do I have to remove the water pump from the water pump cover?
How many bolts hold the water pump cover on?
How do I remove the recoil itself and do I have to be cautious of loosing any critical parts such as washers, key-way or springs.
Can I remove the complete recoil and have a mechanic replace the pull-rope and rewind the spring?  Pleas Help.

Hello Mike,

Sorry I can't help you right off, I need to know how many CC's your sled is, because the removal procedures differ from say the 440 XCR to the 600 XCR. Let me know, and I will let will get back to you! --Arcticatman

The snowmobile is an XCR 600 liquid cooled.

Answer
Hello Mike,

On that Polaris, removal of the recoil shouldn't be too bad. Rope replacement can get frustrating, and you may want to bring the recoil housing it's self to your dealer, so that they can install a new rope. Here is a diagram, that will help as a reference, http://216.37.204.202/polaris_oem/PolarisSnow.asp?Type=13&A=55&B=30  .  To start, you will need to remove the starter case, #11 in the diagram. There are a few bolts, and a nut that holds it in place. Once you have removed all of the bolts that hold the starter case in place, you can pull straight out on it, and it will come right off. There are no parts at this point that will fall off or get lost. Hope this helps you. Let me know if you need any help! Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
