Snowmobile Repair: Ignition coil, system sounds, zrt 800

Question
I replaced the ignition coil on my 95' ZRT 800 with a new one.  The dealership confirmed my tests on the old one being faulty.  The new coil I put on worked for about three trips (a total of about 10 miles) before going out again.  What causes a coil to go bad, or did I possibly buy a faulty coil?

Answer
Hello Bryan,

I'm thinking that your sled is killing your coils. It could be that you bought a faulty coil, but I would doubt it. There should be a warranty on most new coils. What I would recommend is to have the CDI box tested, as well as your electrical system. Sounds like something is pretty worn out and either has too much resistance or is sending too much voltage to your coil. On a 95, the coil will usually keep going for at least another 10 years. Then, the new coil went. That is why I would suspect another problem. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any help! Good luck with the sled! --Arcticatman
