Answer
Hi Carlton:

Wow, have you made a project out of a small job.  What broke in your original column was the ignition rack gear, a $28.00 part.  We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild the upper portion of a Ford steering column (for a small fee).  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website. Although the example is for a Ford Mustang, the column is identical to yours:

The problem with the replacement column is most likely the antitheft system.  You have to use your original key and your original transceiver in order for the car to crank.  Otherwise it goes into theft mode and won't crank over.

So, you can either repair your column for the original problem, or you can build one column out of two using the lock cylinder and electronics from your original and the housing and shaft assembly from the replacement.
I hope these instructions can help you.  Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply locate the part on our website and you can purchase it directly through the shopping cart.  We stock just about everything you would need to repair your car properly.
Good luck
