Steering Column Repair: Steering Loss, yukon xl, 2005 yukon xl

Question
Hello
I have a 2005 Yukon XL, 49000 miles - no accidents- 1st owner.
While driving into a nominal curve - dry road- I lost my steering control and hit hit a curb- fortunately at only 15 mph. Upon stopping I turned the steering wheel and it spun around like a top-  ie no connection to the trucks wheels at all. It could spin around and around. Scary and if I was on a highway I would have likely been in a serious accident.  Didn't even think this was possible. Have you any insight on a possible reason?

Answer

Intermediate coupler
Hi Kevin:
Sorry about your truck.  Glad you were not hurt.
It sounds like the intermediate shaft had become disconnected or broke.  This is the flex joint between the steering column and the steering mechanism to the wheels.  I have enclosed a picture for your, but I would check to see if there are any recalls, and if it's covered under your warranty (under 50,000)
It's a simple repair, but obviously a dangerous circumstance.  (I'm assuming I am correct).

Good luck
Doug
