Steering Column Repair: Ignition is locked, gm dealer, typical problem

Question
I am in need of some assistance with my ignition on my '98
Malibu. You can put the key in but it is not possible to turn
it over at all. I have attempted every possibility that my
friends/family have suggested. Can you please give me some
feed back on this. Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Brandi:

Sorry about your car.  This is a typical problem with your vehicle (and similarly Impala & Alero as well).
When the lock fails, it's usually because it's not reading the key correctly.  Obviously, try another key first.  I would then suggest you have another key made by the dealer form the VIN number.  Do not go to Home depot and copy the bad one, that just duplicates the problem.  go to any GM dealer and have them punch out a new on by the code they look up.  that may help your problem.  If that doesn't work, try spraying some WD40 inside the lock, not a lot, just enough to lubricate the tumblers.  Then, gently (as if your thumb were in the way), tap the key with a hammer driving it deeper in the lock while you attempt to turn it.  Do this repeatedly in fast succession...tap, tap, tap, tap, tap, all the while trying to turn the lock and key.  You are trying to jar the lock to drop and read the key better.

I hope some of this works for you.  Once it does turn, you might consider having the lock replaced because it will seize up again.  They are not cheap locks ($224 for the part only), so be prepared for a $300-$400 bill)

Good luck

Doug
