Steering Column Repair: GM first generation tilt steering column, gm vehicles, tilt steering

Question
I need to replace the rod for the ignition switch. How do I get the key tumbler out of early modole Gm tilt steering column. The column is a '48 chevy I have no idea what it is out of other than GM. There is no set screw.

Answer
Hi George:

We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to replace the lock cylinder on GM vehicles.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions. Here is a link to that page.  This covers most of the locks from 1968 to present.

Lastly, I would have a new lock cylinder in hand before you begin, to see what you are working on (hidden in the column) and accomplish finishing this job quickly.

Good luck

PS  sometimes the lock cylinder is fused pretty tight in there having been in the housing for 40 years.  It may take some effort to get it out, but keep trying.
