Steering Column Repair: Steering Column, ford steering column, change gears

Question
I have a 1992 f-150 and the shifter came loose. I have had this problem before but before a screw had fallen out from under the the dash and I put it back where it belonged and everything was ok but know it came loose again but the screw is in place. I can move the shifter up and down but it moves very freely and does not change gears, I took it to the shop and they said they have to replace the entire steering column and its gonna cost $500. I just don't think thats necessary. Is it?

Answer
Hi Jacob:

We have recently uploaded pages and a description of how to repair and/or rebuild the shift tube of a Ford steering column.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website. The example is for a vehicle that is identical to yours (tilt and non tilt use the same housing)
