Steering Column Repair: Steering Column, intermediate shaft, column design

My mechanic says I need to replace the steering shaft slip joint on my 1989 F250 Lariot XLT. Does this mean I have to replace the whole column? Where can I get one? Thanks!

I think your mechanic is talking about the intermediate shaft, which is fairly common on this vehicle.  If so, then the answer is no, you only need to replace the slip shat.  I have attached a blowup picture of the entire steering column design on your vehicle for you to better understand the components and see what everyone may be talking about.
