Steering Column Repair: GMC 1995 Steering column, coachman motor home, square 1

Question
QUESTION: It's in a Coachman motor home and my husband was using a computer thing to check the temperature when he noticed that the computer thing had melted through a wire, we need to know what that wire does and fix it.

ANSWER: Hi Karlene:

I'm going to need a little more information in order to help you.  Can you post a picture of the melted wire?  Can you tell me what color the wire is, where it is and what you think it is connected to (steering column, dashboard, Data link connector, etc)?
Pictures work the best here though

I'll watch for your reply
Doug

QUESTION: Please find attached a picture of the part we need to know what is does.  My bad, it wasn't a wire, it's this part.  Thanks for your quick response - if you can tell me what this part does, we would SO appreciate it.

Answer
Thanks so much.
That part is the "brake-shifter release solenoid".  It's the part that stops you from shifting the truck unless your foot is on the brake.  If the truck shifts fine with it out, then you should be fine, but be aware that the small black cable that attaches to the white part is what stops you from shifting the truck. If at any time, the cable moves out of position from where it is, it can stop you from shifting out of park.
I suggest you locate the cable and become familiar with the different positions that may prevent you from shifting...then move it back to where it works fine for you.
Otherwise, replace the solenoid and you're back to "square 1".
Good luck
Doug
