Steering Column Repair: loose steering, gmc vandura 2500, gmc vandura

Question
QUESTION: I have a 1991 GMC Vandura 3500 with a tilt wheel.  It is loose and can be moved up and down and sideways.  How do I fix it and does it require special tools?

ANSWER: Hi Al:

We have recently uploaded some videos on our company website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the loose tilt column you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.

I hope these videos help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply locate the part and you can purchase it directly through the shopping cart.  We stock just about everything you would need to repair your car properly.
Good luck

QUESTION: Hello,  Thanks for your previous answer concerning my loose steering wheel.  Now I have another situation about the steering on my 1991 GMC Vandura 2500.  The mechanic said that my steering column was needed to be replaced so he found one from a 1989.  Now I have new problems to deal with...If I turn the key on in "Park" and start the engine, I can only go to reverse.  I have to shut off the engine and put the shift lever in neutral and start the engine to go only into the forward gears.  I again have to shut off the engine in neutral and place the shift lever into park.  What the heck could be wrong that I now have to go through all of these steps to go forward or backward.  Something is not right and please help if you can.  Thanks, Al

Answer
Hi Al:
That's the problem with switching out columns as opposed to repairing the original problem.

What you have now is a bit more complicated than the previous problem. There is a shifter interlock mechanism on these vehicles (I think you have to step on the brake to release the shifter).  The column you have now has that mechanism either bent or damaged inside the shift bowl under the tilt mechanism.  To repair this portion of the column you need to go well beyond the tilt problem that you had with the original column.  So basically, I'm sorry to say, you traded up in problems and cost.
I would either get another column, or send us the old one so we can rebuild it for you and you can put that one back in the truck.
