Steering Column Repair: 1988 k2500 steering column, turn signal switch, chevrolet truck

Question
Hello, I have a 1988 Chevy k2500 pick up with tilt steering. The truck has a manual trans.. Its a hard problem to describe exactly but its like the steering wheel is out of socket. It steers the truck just fine but the wheel moves up and down and side to side, sitting still or moving it never changes. It almost feels like I could just push the wheel in and if it would stay everything would be fine. Someone said its the blinker switch but it seems to me that it is deeper than that but not as deep as the tilt lever, which works fine . Any ideas?

Thanks,
Travis

Answer

GM shaft knuckle
Hi Travis:

You may have a loose tilt housing stand, or the knuckle inside the tilt housing (on the shaft itself) may be worn out.  (picture attached) This is different than the common loose tilt that most people experience, but the only way to fin out what it is is to disassemble it and check the moving parts as you go deeper.  It is definitely not the turn signal switch, there is nothing in that part that affects the shaft.

We have recently uploaded some videos on our company website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the column you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the videos are for a newer Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.

I hope these videos help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply locate the part and you can purchase it directly through the shopping cart.  We stock just about everything you would need to repair your car properly.
Good luck
