Steering Column Repair: RE:steering shaft bearing, ford steering column, steering column repair

Question
QUESTION: I read the posting on the 97 Ford F-150, about the bearings wearing out. I am in the same predicament, I have torn apart my steering column and the replacement I got from the junk yard isn't a match because I thought the initial problem was a broken spring behind the steering wheel.  My bearing are definitely worn out, where can I find the bearings?

ANSWER: Hello Fernando:
We sell the bearings and the upper parts to rebuild what you have.  Here is that link

We have also recently uploaded pages and a description of how to rebuild the upper portion of a Ford steering column.  They are broken down into step by step detailed instructions on our website. Although the example is for a 2000 Mustang, the column is identical to yours (tilt and non tilt use the same housing)

I hope these instructions help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply click online to order them.  We stock and sell all of the parts you will need for this job.

Good luck

QUESTION: OK I got another dilemma, when I started this repair I took out the entire upper portion of the steering column down to where it connects to the first u-joint. Trying to reassemble, when I took it apart the column shift lever was in my way so I turned the key and moved it. Now I don't remember what gear it was in. I got underneath and moved the gear switch on the transmission by hand and tried a "trial and error" fit. So I finally got the shifting cable in place, but when I test it out, Park is the only gear that locks in place, because of the neutral safety switch. All other gears, the column shifter just slides through the gears and the cable doesn't have that tension when you shift normally. Any ideas?

Fernando:

The housing of the cable has a plastic locking tab that may have popped up and it is not not allowing the cable to be locked in any one position.  You may need 2 people to do this.  Shift the cable and watch what moves underneath.
Also, the shift tube on the column has a tendency to loosen up on the bottom where the cable attaches.  Check that to see if all the bolts are tight.  I'm enclosing a picture of that common problem.  That's all I can think of for now.
