Steering Column Repair: 1969 gto ignition lock cylinder, lock cylinder, casting design

Question
Hello, I am trying to replace the lock cylinder in my 69 gto without tilt. I punched through the tin cover above the steering shaft to gain access and release the retainer. I do not see anything there to depress. What am I missing? Thanks, Bill.

Hi Bill:

My guess is that you punched through the casting in the wrong place...an easy mistake.  There are 2 areas that look alike in the casting.  The one closest to the outside of the bowl is the one that will connect with your release bar.  Use the new lock cylinder to measure or 'guestimate' the exact location of the release bar.  That's where you push through.  Sometimes they old locks are a bit tricky to get out and you have to work the lock and bar until it moves.  I've had them where they are so old and frozen they don't move at all and you still have to break it apart to get it out.

I've attached a picture for you showing the location on a 1978 bowl, so visualize where it is on yours; it should be the same casting design.

Good luck
Doug
