i have a 1998 ford Taurus and one morning the ignition switch moved freely. took the column cover apart and took the ignition box out and was able to crank the car without the switch by using the box. thnk that the rod that the ignition switch is broken. how would i take the steering column apart and the steering wheel off without making the airbag go off

Hi Kevin:

You have broken the rack gear actuator.  I am enclosing a picture of the part so you can see what it is.

Although the example is for a 2000 Mustang, the column is identical to yours (tilt and non tilt use the same housing)
