Steering Column Repair: dash and tail lights wont work, mazda b2200, salvage yards

Question
I have an 89' mazda b2200 and the dash lights went out on me a few weeks ago. They stared to dim on me and then would go off and on for a while. Now they're completey off and I've been informed that my tail lights don't work either. I've checked all the fuses, the wire connections, and the bulbs and all are in good shape. The brakes lights work, as well as my turn signals. Its just the dash and tail lights that don't. I've been told it might be a unit inside the steering column. Is this an easy fix? I'm as handy as te next guy I guess, but don't have much experience.

Answer
Hi Dan:
The multifunction switch is easily replaced, but very pricey ($250).

Here are the step by step instructions if you decide to go forward
1 Disconnect battery ground cable.
2 Remove steering wheel.
3 Remove steering column trim covers.
4 Disconnect combination switch electrical connectors, and remove stop ring from steering column shaft.
5 Remove combination switch from steering column.
6 Reverse procedure to install

It's the website all the salvage yards use when they say "Hang on--let me see if my other yard has it".  Actually it's an online database of all the salvage yards in America.  You can search by part, location or price
