Steering Column Repair: 1978 GMC Sierra Ignition Switch Replacement, tilt column, gmc sierra

Question
QUESTION: I am looking for a procedure (with photos or diagrams) to replace a faulty 1978 GMC Sierra Ignition Switch. I am having problems figuring out how to get the trim covers off without breaking them.

Can anyone help ??

ANSWER: Hi Jim:

I'm not sure what trim covers you are referring to and I need to know if in fact you are replacing the ignition switch or the ignition lock cylinder.

We have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you may be talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. The videos are for a Chevrolet truck; the column is very similar to yours.

I hope these videos help you.  If not, please contact me again for more information.
Lastly, if you need parts to repair this column simply email us on our "Contact Us / Order Parts" page and we will get back in touch with you personally

Good luck

Doug

QUESTION: I have removed the dash bolts.I need to replace both the cylinder and the ignition switch. The trim covers are the first (i am assuming here) thing that needs to be removed. They are black and round...but I see no bolts or screws holding them on. They will reveal the switch that is in question. The videos you included are good....but they already show the trim covers removed.

Answer
OK Tim:
I need to know if you have a tilt or non-tilt column (they are slightly different).  I also need to know if the "trim covers" you are talking about are part of the dash or if they are the bowls and housings on the column.
The ignition lock cylinder is located inside the upper part of the column and our videos tell you exactly how to remove that part.
The ignition switch is located under the dash, mounted to the outside of the steering column just above your ankles.  The only trim covers needed to be removed for that part to be replaced is the one under the column attached to the dash.
You are very familiar with your own truck, but I have to rely on a 20 year old memory to try and help you.  If you want to post a picture here of what you are struggling with, that would probably help.
Why are you changing both of these parts?  Usually only one is bad.
