Steering Column Repair: 2002 Chevy Suburban loose steering column, pitman arm, chevy suburban

Question
I have a 2002 Chevy Suburban with a rattle or clunking that can be felt when you go over bumps in the road.  The steering wheel is not loose but I have had this problem before and didn't have time to fix it and took it to the dealer who had to replace some bushings in the column (cost $100 to $200).  I called the dealer to find out if I can get the bushings or the kit and they said they don't carry it anymore which consisted of some special grease and bushings.  They also said that there was a recall, which I found TSB's online but that I have to replace the whole column now and they don't service the columns for this anymore.  I have time to do the work as I used to be ASE certified back in the day but I can't see replacing the whole column for possibly some bushings and special grease. Do you have any suggestions or where I can get parts for this?  I checked the pitman arm and it's not loose neither is the idler arm.
Thanks,
Stan

Answer
Hi Stan:
I did some research on your vehicle and yes, there was a TSB out for your complaint.  It all boils down to the 'intermediate steering shaft".

This is the shaft that attaches to the end of the steering column (under the hood) and to the lower steering shaft-before the gearbox.v  It's held on by a single bolt on each end...coupling the column to the gearbox.

It's a very simple replacement calling for less than .8 hrs and the shaft according to Alldata is about $95.00.
You should be able to handle it and I would think that GM still produces this part.  I would recommend calling your local Chev dealer wit your VIN and asking for that part by name.

That should do it for you.

Good luck
