Steering Column Repair: 84 chevy steering column, pivot pin, chevy steering column

i have an 84 chevy impala it was stolen. they popped the cover off the steering column on the left side now it wont start with the key, is there a way i can fix it or do i have to get a new steering column. inorder to start it there is a a switch on the left side that i have to pull up with my hands and to push it down to uncrank the car.

Hi Michael:
The black gear that moves the rack you are pulling up to start the car has been removed by the thief.  If you can find it, put it back in place on the steel pivot pin that goes across to the lock cylinder.  Then you will be able to rotate it using the key and start your car.  I am enclosing a picture of the gear you are looking for here.

You can certainly rebuild the column if you have the tools and knowledge.
