Question
I have a 2000 Silverado Z71 that needs the wiper switch replaced. Please advise as to the steps involved and if it is advisable to do this ourselves or have it done. Thanx!!

Answer

multiswitch
Hi Robin:
Here is a picture of the multifunction switch you are contemplating replacing.  I have no idea of your individual capability to accomplish this so I will leave the advisability in your hands.
Here are the steps.

Disconnect the battery
Remove the steering column covers and lock cylinder. The lock cylinder removal is the hardest part.  The release pin is accessed through a small hole on the top of the housing.  It's tough to see and you need to hold the key in the 'start' position to release it. (it takes 3 hands to do this part)
Remove the lower dash panel to access the wire harnesses.
Disconnect the 60 pin bulk connector under the dash for the steering column wiring.
Cut all the tie straps that hold the wires to the column and other harnesses.  STAY AWAY FROM THE YELLOW WIRE HARNESS.  That's your airbag wiring.
Remove the 2- 20 torx bolts that hold the multiswitch to the column.

When you install the new one be very careful of the spring loaded horn contact that needs to tuck under the horn cam.  If you bend or break it, you just ruined the new switch.
When you install the covers be very careful not to break the red 4-way button on top, or (you just ruined the new switch)
Reassemble the reset of the items you took apart.

Good luck
Doug
