ANSWER: Hi Calvin:
Is this a tilt steering wheel or a non-tilt wheel?  If it is a tilt wheel, we have recently uploaded some videos on our website to give you first hand viewing of how to remove, disassemble, and reassemble the parts you are talking about. They are broken down into step by step 2-3 minute detailed videos with instructions. Although the video is for a newer Chevrolet truck, the column is very similar to yours.

QUESTION: hey doug,

thanks for the quick reply. the videos seemed very detailed but i still have not understood how to get the steering tight. i have looked online for the name of the piece thats giving me problems but couldnt find it. forgive while i explain what it is i am very new to this. it is the rod that goes through the steering column and has the threads at the end that connect to the steering wheel. this piece is very wobbly. could it possibly be the bearing? or what other ideas would you think. it is a tilt steering column.

ANSWER: Hi again Calvin:
You are doing fine.
The piece you are talking about is the upper steering shaft. Yes, it does have bearings that go bad and can cause it to be loose as you describe.  These bearings are replaceable, but require a bit of work to get to them.
I will attach a blowup drawing of the column with all the pieces in it.  If you think you can fix this yourself, I can certainly sell you the bearings, but there are a lot of parts that need to go back together properly or things will never be right.
the bearings cost about $45 plus shipping.
Here is the page on our website that shows you the part. (Brg01)

QUESTION: ok well that will make since i have taken it down to the bearings and they seem pretty shabby but since im new i didnt know if it was supposed to look like that. well thanks a lot for the help. i do have some other problems if theres any way you might could point me into the right direction again. blinkers and lights. all my lights work except for two functions. the reverse lights do not come on at all and they do have a new bulb. my RIGHT blinker when i signal for the right blinker my front light will work fine but my back blinker instead makes both taillights blink like emergency. any ideas? i have a schematic of a wire diagram but i dont really understand it. any help would be much appreciated.

Answer
OK Cal:
The reverse lights are on a switch that is at the base of the steering column...two wires light green and black.  That's the switch that works those light.  It also has a separate fuse for backup lights.
The right turn signal has a bad socket or the wrong bulb in the right rear.  this is causing the current to backfeed into other circuits..  make sure youhave a 2 filament bulb in ther and if you do, the replace the socket.
That should do you
