Steering Column Repair: lost key, plymouth voyager, tilt wheel

Question
QUESTION: we lost the key to our 1989 plymouth voyager and had a new one made from the door lock.  now it seems there is a broken key in the ignition.  how can i get the cylinder out and remove the key piece.  it has non tilt wheel.  thank you in advance.

ANSWER: Hi Jack:

This is a VERY tough job to do, let alone explain on the internet.  Believe it or not, it's one of the more complicated designs (tilt columns are much easier & we even have  a video posted showing you how).  On this model, there are too many pieces that need to fit perfectly during assembly.  I would suggest you contact a locksmith and see if he may be able to remove the piece without removing the lock...the good ones have very tiny drills and picks made just for that.

I'm sorry, but I hope that helps

Doug

QUESTION: hi again doug;  hope you can ad a little more guidence.  i would normally figure something out but i was in an accident and cannot get into the seat.  my son will do the job but has limited skills.  i am limited on spending and the key was 50 so far.  i did not see the video so please direct me to it.  do ipull the wheel or the ignition or ??.  a new ignition is 50+.  your help would be greatly appreciated.  thank you

Answer
Jack:

I am sorry for your condition.

I cannot stress enough how difficult this job is.  I am an expert and this lock replacement takes me over an hour to do WITH the proper tools, experience and knowledge.  I understand your desire to accomplish this on your own, but once you get it apart you will never get it back together.  You will end up calling a tow truck and then a mechanic.  Return the lock (if you already bought it) and call a locksmith or a mechanic now who's done this before.
This is not a job I can explain in step by step procedures and as I said before, the video we post does not cover this column.
