Steering Column Repair: 1997 Blazer wont shift out of Park, 4x4 blazer, tilt wheel

Question
Jay, My son's 97 Chevy S-10 4X4 Blazer will not shift out of Park. It is the factory floor mounted shifter. Applying the brake pedal before shifting and pushing in on shifter button makes something "click" within the steering column. I have tried adjusting the tilt wheel into every possible position and turning the steering wheel in several directions with no luck. Any suggestions?

Answer
Hello Mike,
Sorry for the delay in my response. I just returned from vacation to a full mailbox and am slowly working my way through all of the questions.
Your son's Blazer problem sounds like the safety lock on the shift mechanism has quit. It's called a Brake Transmission Shift Interlock (BTSI) solenoid. It's not going to be a matter of adjusting the steering column, but more of a disassembly of the console to get at the shifter to check for signals at the wires.

I hope that helps.
Have a great day!
