Steering Column Repair: Clunky steering, cv joint, rubber boots

Question
Dear Rob,

I drive a 1995 Honda Civic DX with about 180k miles on it.  Lately I have noticed clunking sounds whenever I am making a sharp right turn.  Noise does not appear during left turns, when driving straight, or when making gradual right turns.  Overall performance of car seems fine.  Any idea what this might be?  Thanks.

Answer
Hi,

My first thought would be a CV joint in the right front axle.
One sure sign would be to look under the car on the right front suspension. You will see a couple of rubber boots on the axle. If a boot is ripped spilling out grease, you will know that is the problem.
Take the vehicle to a tire store (not the dealer) and have them inspect the problem.

Good luck!
