Subaru Repair: Subaru/Audi 4 wheel drive, cvt transmission, legacy platform

Question
At what years did Subaru and Audi change their engineering from differential select levers to AWD & Quattro.  

Tho these may be customer preferred, I would prefer to stay with 'front-wheel 4-wheel' for greater mileage and simplicity.

I don't know enough about Audi to answer your Question, for Subaru it was with the Legacy platform in 1990 but the Loyale had a push button 4wd system until 1994.  But they made a 2wd Legacy up until 1997


The idea behind AWD is safety, not fuel economy, Subaru addressed that in 2010 with the CVT Transmission.
