Subaru Repair: Suburu Legacy Outback - cambelt change, Subaru Parts

Question
Dear Sir
My wife has a 2004 2.5L Suburu legacy outback that is due a timing belt replacement. I've replaced them before on an Isuzu trooper which was a doddle. Is this easy to do on a suburu and do you require any special tools e.g for tensioning?

Richard

Answer
Richard,

Yes there are a couple of tools you need to buy.  The most important is the one for removing the crankshaft pulley bolt.

As far as ease of repair, I really don't work on much else so really don't know how it rates as compared to a Isuzu.

If you plan on making the repair your self, plan on replacing the tensioner, idlers and maybe think about the water pump.  Lastly we usually try and reseal the oil pump while we are in there.

I would buy at least the service manual form the Subaru dealer.  Or buy your parts from someone that can help you.
